Voya Unsung Heroes Grant $2000 Award Winner: Summer, 2019

I was awarded a grant to purchase and place Tower Gardens in my classroom. The gardens will give students the opportunity to grow a variety of plants throughout the school year. Students will be able to apply concepts learned in the classroom to growing and maintaining a hydroponic garden year-round.

Teton Science School Storer Scholar: Spring, 2016

The Storer Foundation awards six undergraduates and one graduate student from the University of Wyoming with the opportunity to train and gain teaching experience in place-based education with Teton Science Schools. The recipients also receive a financial award.

The scholars are assigned a summer teaching assignment, where they team up with Teton Science Schools to teach a summer science program with a participating Wyoming school district. To prepare for this, students attend a place-based education course at Teton Science Schools in Grand Teton National Park in May. There, students focus on learning place-based education; how to teach science to children in the outdoors; and outdoor leadership.

I was one of six undergraduate students selected from an application process to be a Storer Scholar. The week I spent learning about outdoor and place-based education at Teton Science Schools was unforgettable. I learned so much about place-based education and was able to further develop my own teaching philosophy.

I was then assigned to help teach a week-long summer science course in Lander. The focus of the week was archaeology, and the students ranged from 1st graders to 6th graders. I was able to lead lessons with each age group in outdoor settings focused on observations and archaeology in the Lander area.
